Week 1 Reading

Both of these articles showed how America has failed to handle the pandemic. When reading about how Denmark reopened school about a month after they closed surprised me. They were able to come up with ideas and were willing to spend more to make sure students were able to get the education they needed. I feel as if in America, our education system is failing students even before there was a pandemic. Many schools are underfunded and lack the resources they need, especially inner-city public schools. If schools open online, then many students will not have the one on one interaction with teachers and fall behind. Many lower-income students also can not receive the one on one help from their parents because their parents may not have the proper education themselves or they do not speak English. If schools open completely, then many students who attend schools that are overcrowded and underfunded will have a higher risk of catching COVID.

When reading “Colleges Are a Deeply Unequal Workplace,” I was not surprised. Colleges are a business and focus on ways to make more money. Students will definitely be their priority because they are the ones paying. As a society, we place more importance on people with jobs that are seen as better and often prioritize them over people who have jobs that pay less and require less education.
